The best weekend getaways from Delhi for families are Neemrana and Alwar for short drives, Jaipur, Agra and Rishikesh for culture and rivers, Jim Corbett for wildlife, and Landour, Mussoorie, Kasauli or Shimla for the hills. Choose by drive time, season and your children's ages, and leave early to beat traffic.
Delhi families are lucky. Within a day's drive you have forts, tigers, rivers and pine forests. The trick is matching the destination to the length of your weekend and the patience of your back-seat passengers. Here is how I think about weekend getaways from Delhi as a working mom with a toddler.
How do you choose a weekend getaway from Delhi with kids?
- Drive time: with young children, aim for a total drive you can do in one stretch with two breaks. Anything longer works better as a long weekend.
- Season: the plains are lovely from October to March; the hills are a relief from April to June and magical in winter if you pack well.
- Stay type: a resort with lawns, a pool or a play area means the stay itself becomes the activity.
- Age of children: toddlers enjoy space and nature; older kids love history, wildlife and adventure.
Drive times below are rough and depend heavily on the route, traffic and stops, so always check a live map before you set off.
Which getaways are closest to Delhi?
1. Neemrana
One of the easiest escapes for families with small children. The heritage fort-palace setting, open courtyards and countryside feel like a world away from the city, yet the drive is short. Ideal for a Saturday-to-Sunday reset.
2. Alwar and Sariska
Lakes, old palaces and the Sariska Tiger Reserve make this a good mix of nature and heritage. Check safari timings and booking rules on the official forest department website.
3. Agra
With the expressway, a weekend in Agra is very doable. Visit the Taj Mahal early in the morning to avoid heat and crowds, and add Agra Fort and Mehtab Bagh for sunset views across the river.
Which weekend getaways from Delhi suit culture-loving families?
4. Jaipur
Amber Fort, City Palace, Hawa Mahal and Jantar Mantar give older kids plenty of stories. Keep the pace slow in summer; winter weekends are the most comfortable.
5. Rishikesh and Haridwar
The Ganga Aarti at Har Ki Pauri in Haridwar or at Parmarth Niketan in Rishikesh is a moving experience for children. Riverside walks, the Laxman Jhula and Ram Jhula area, and gentle cafe culture make Rishikesh a calm family base. Rafting has age limits, so check with operators.
Where can families go for wildlife near Delhi?
6. Jim Corbett National Park
India's oldest national park is a favourite with families. Safari zones, permits and seasonal closures are managed by the park authority, so book jeep safaris through the official website well in advance. Resorts along the Kosi river have plenty of space for children.
Which hill stations work as a weekend getaway from Delhi?
7. Landour
Quiet, walkable and full of old-world charm, with Char Dukan, Lal Tibba and pine-shaded lanes. Perfect for slow weekends. Read my full Landour travel guide for a sample plan.
8. Mussoorie
More lively than Landour, with Mall Road, Gun Hill, Kempty Falls and Company Garden. Better for families who want activity. Not sure which to pick? See Mussoorie vs Landour.
9. Kasauli
A small cantonment town with forest walks, colonial churches and Monkey Point views. Calmer than Shimla and a little closer.
10. Shimla
The Ridge, Mall Road and the heritage toy train to Kalka make Shimla a classic. Best as a long weekend because of the drive.

What should you pack for a family weekend away?
A weekend trip should fit in one shared suitcase plus a day bag. Over-packing is the most common mistake on short getaways. My basic weekend kit for a family with a little one:
- Two outfits per person plus one spare for the child
- One warm layer each, even for the plains in winter evenings
- Comfortable walking shoes for forts, ghats and hill lanes
- Sunscreen, caps and sunglasses for Rajasthan and the river towns
- A small first-aid pouch and any regular medicines
- Snacks, refillable water bottles and a few car games or audiobooks
Keeping a pre-packed toiletry kit ready at home makes it much easier to say yes to a last-minute weekend away.
How do you make a weekend road trip easy with kids?
- Leave very early on Saturday to beat city traffic and the afternoon heat.
- Plan a break every two hours at a clean, family-friendly stop.
- Carry home-packed snacks, water and a change of clothes in the car.
- Book a stay that allows early check-in or has a lounge where children can rest.
- Return on Sunday after lunch so the kids sleep in the car and Monday is not a disaster.

Short family trips and staycations are a big part of my family travel and hotel collaborations, because they are how most Delhi parents actually travel.
