A good toddler packing list for international travel covers six categories: documents, clothing, feeding, sleep, health and hygiene, and entertainment. Keep a separate cabin bag with one day of essentials, pack outfits by day in packing cubes, and leave bulky items like large diaper packs behind since most destinations sell them.
The secret to packing for a toddler is not packing more. It is packing in a system so you can find the right thing in ten seconds with a crying child on your hip. Here is the toddler packing list I recommend to friends, organised the way you will actually use it.
What documents does a toddler need for international travel?
- Child's passport, with plenty of validity left
- Visa or entry approval, where required (check the official embassy website for current rules)
- Printed and digital copies of tickets, hotel bookings and insurance
- Birth certificate copy, helpful if the child's surname differs from a parent's
- Vaccination records and any prescriptions from your paediatrician
- Consent letter if travelling with only one parent; some countries and airlines ask for it
Keep all of these in one zipped pouch that stays with one adult throughout the journey.
How many clothes should you pack for a toddler?
For a one-week trip, plan one outfit per day plus two spares, and assume you will do a quick wash midway. Toddlers get messy, but they also outgrow the need for variety. Choose mix-and-match colours so everything works together.
| Item | Warm destination (7 days) | Cold destination (7 days) |
|---|---|---|
| Tops / T-shirts | 8 | 6, plus 3 thermal inners |
| Bottoms | 5 shorts or light pants | 5 warm pants or leggings |
| Sleepwear | 3 sets | 3 sets, full-sleeve |
| Outer layer | 1 light jacket | 1 padded jacket, 1 fleece |
| Footwear | Sandals, sneakers | Waterproof shoes, sneakers |
| Accessories | Sun hat, swimwear x2 | Cap, mittens, scarf, warm socks |
Use packing cubes, one per day or one per category. Rolling clothes saves space and makes it easy to see everything.
What feeding essentials should you carry?
- Sippy cup or spill-proof water bottle
- Formula or milk powder in pre-measured containers, if your child uses it
- Collapsible bowl, spoon and a travel bib
- Familiar snacks for the first two days while you find local options
- Small bottle brush and a travel-size dish soap
- Food pouches for transit days
Check airline and airport rules on carrying liquids, milk and baby food in cabin baggage, as they differ by country.
What do you need for toddler sleep away from home?
- Toddler's own sleeping bag or a familiar light blanket
- Favourite soft toy, plus a backup if it is irreplaceable
- Portable white noise app or small device
- A couple of bedtime books
- Travel blackout cover or clips to close curtain gaps
Most good hotels provide a cot on request, so a travel cot is usually optional unless you are staying in rentals.
Which health and hygiene items belong on a toddler packing list?
- A basic first-aid kit with plasters, a thermometer and any items your paediatrician recommends
- Any regular medicines your child takes, in original packaging with a prescription
- Child-safe sunscreen and insect repellent suitable for their age (ask your doctor)
- Diapers for the journey plus two days; buy the rest locally
- Wipes, diaper rash cream, disposable changing mats and nappy bags
- Hand sanitiser, tissues and a small toddler toothbrush kit
Do not pack medicines on guesswork. Speak to your paediatrician before any international trip about what is right for your child.
What should go in a toddler's cabin bag?
Your cabin bag should get you through 24 hours even if checked luggage goes missing. This is the part of the toddler packing list I never compromise on.
- Two full changes of clothes for the child and one top for each parent
- Diapers for the journey plus extra for delays
- Wipes, a changing mat and nappy bags
- Snacks, milk and the sippy cup
- Medicines and the document pouch
- A light blanket and the comfort toy
- A small busy bag: stickers, a board book, a few small toys, crayons
- A tablet with downloaded shows and toddler headphones

How do you organise a toddler's suitcase?
A list only helps if the suitcase is organised to match it. A few habits make a big difference:
- Give the toddler their own cube set inside a shared suitcase rather than a separate bag, so you have fewer pieces to manage.
- Label cubes by day or category, such as "Day 1–2", "Sleep" or "Swim", so either parent can find things.
- Keep a top layer for arrival: pyjamas, toothbrush, the next morning's outfit and diapers, so the first night needs no unpacking.
- Split essentials across bags. Put a spare set of clothes and diapers in each adult's luggage in case one bag is delayed.
- Save a printed copy of this list in the suitcase and tick it off again when you pack to come home.
What can you leave at home?
- Bulky diaper packs and large wipe stacks: available almost everywhere
- Too many toys: a few rotating ones beat a full bag
- Heavy prams: a light, foldable travel stroller does the job
- Bath toys and baby shampoo bottles: decant into small containers or buy locally
