A winter hill station packing list for Delhi families should focus on layering: thermal inners, a warm mid-layer such as fleece, and a windproof or waterproof outer jacket, plus woollen caps, gloves, warm socks and grippy shoes. Add a health kit, moisturiser and lip balm, snacks for the drive, and extra layers for children who feel the cold quickly.
Delhi winters can fool you. A sweater that works in the city at noon will not be enough for an evening walk in Landour, Shimla or Mussoorie in December. As a Delhi mom who packs for a toddler too, I have learnt that the right hill station packing list is not about carrying more; it is about carrying the right layers. Here is the checklist I use.
How should you layer for a hill station in winter?
Layering traps warmth and lets you adjust as temperatures change through the day. Use three layers:
| Layer | Purpose | What to pack |
|---|---|---|
| Base layer | Keeps warmth close to the skin | Thermal tops and bottoms |
| Mid layer | Insulation | Fleece, sweater or light down jacket |
| Outer layer | Blocks wind, rain and snow | Windproof, water-resistant padded jacket |
Avoid relying on one very thick sweater. Two thinner layers are warmer and more flexible, especially in heated cafes and cars.
What should adults pack for a winter hill station trip?
- 2 to 3 sets of thermal inners
- 2 fleeces or sweaters
- 1 warm, windproof jacket, ideally with a hood
- Jeans or warm trousers, plus one pair of fleece-lined leggings or track pants
- Woollen cap, muffler or scarf, and gloves
- Woollen socks, at least one pair per day
- Sleepwear warm enough for a cold room
- A shawl or stole, useful for temples and cosy evenings

What should kids wear in a hill station in winter?
Children lose heat faster than adults and do not always tell you they are cold. Pack one more layer for them than you think you need.
- 3 to 4 sets of thermal inners, as kids get messy
- Fleece jackets or warm sweaters
- A padded, waterproof jacket or snowsuit if you expect snow
- Woollen caps that cover the ears, mittens and neck warmers
- Plenty of warm socks, plus spares for wet feet
- Warm sleepsuits or a sleeping bag for toddlers
- A blanket for the car and stroller
For international winter trips with little ones, my toddler packing list has the complete set of essentials.
Which shoes are best for hill stations in winter?
- Waterproof boots or sneakers with good grip for wet, icy or steep lanes
- Comfortable walking shoes for town walks and promenades
- Warm slippers or socks with grip for cold floors at your stay
Break in new shoes well before the trip, ideally on a few long walks. Steep roads in places like Landour and Shimla are not the time to discover blisters.
What should be in your winter health and skin kit?
- A heavy moisturiser and lip balm for dry mountain air
- Sunscreen, since winter sun at altitude is strong
- Any regular medicines, with prescriptions
- A basic first-aid kit with plasters and a thermometer
- Saline nasal spray or other items your doctor recommends for dry air
- Tissues and hand sanitiser
For children, speak to your paediatrician about a travel kit before you go, especially if your child is prone to colds or motion sickness on winding roads.
What should you keep in the car for a hill drive?
- Snacks, water and a flask of something warm
- A blanket and an extra layer within reach
- Bags and wipes for motion sickness
- Phone chargers, a power bank and offline maps
- A torch, as daylight ends early in winter
- Entertainment for kids: audiobooks, songs and car games
Check road conditions and weather alerts before you leave, especially if snow is forecast, and plan to reach before dark. My guide to road trips from Delhi with kids has more tips.
How do you pack a family's winter clothes efficiently?
Winter clothing is bulky, so how you pack matters as much as what you pack.
- Wear the bulkiest layer in the car rather than packing it.
- Use vacuum or compression bags for fleeces and sweaters.
- Pack one cube per person, with thermals and socks together, so mornings are quick.
- Keep a "first evening" bag with warm sleepwear, caps and the toiletry kit, so you do not unpack everything on arrival in the cold.
- Carry a laundry bag to keep wet or muddy clothes away from clean ones.
What can you skip on a hill station packing list?
- Too many outfits: layers and a few mix-and-match pieces are enough.
- Heavy ethnic wear, unless you have a function to attend.
- Bulky toys: a few small ones are enough when there is snow and nature outside.
- Ski gear for most Indian hill stations, unless you are heading to a dedicated ski area.
