Phuket With Family: Where to Stay and What to Do

For Phuket with family, stay in calmer west-coast areas like Kata, Karon, Kamala, Bang Tao or Mai Khao rather than busy Patong. Visit between November and April when seas are calmer, plan beach mornings and pool afternoons, and add one or two day trips like Phang Nga Bay or the Phi Phi Islands if your kids are fine on boats.

Phuket is Thailand's largest island and one of the most popular beach holidays for Indian families. Flights are convenient, food is varied, and the island has everything from quiet bays to lively promenades. Phuket is one of the places our family has travelled to, and this is how I would plan Phuket with family, especially with young children.

Which area of Phuket is best for families?

AreaVibeBest for
KataLively but relaxed, good beachFamilies wanting a balance of activity and calm
KaronLong, wide beach, easy-goingBeach walks, sandcastles
KamalaQuiet, local feelToddlers, grandparents
Bang Tao / LagunaResort-focused, spaciousPool-and-resort holidays
Mai KhaoRemote, close to the airportA peaceful stay, short transfers
Nai HarnScenic bay in the southFamilies who love nature
PatongBusy nightlife and shoppingNot ideal as a base with small children

Phuket Old Town is charming for a day visit but is inland, so most families stay by the beach.

What are the best things to do in Phuket with family?

On the island

  • Big Buddha: a hilltop landmark with wide views across the island. Dress modestly.
  • Phuket Old Town: colourful Sino-Portuguese shophouses, street art and a gentle walk.
  • Promthep Cape: one of the island's best-known sunset viewpoints.
  • Beaches and pools: for toddlers, this will be the highlight.
  • An ethical elephant sanctuary: choose a no-riding, observation-based sanctuary and research its welfare practices carefully.
  • Phuket Aquarium at Cape Panwa: a manageable outing for little ones.
  • Cooking classes: many offer family sessions where children can help make simple Thai dishes.

Island and bay trips

  • Phang Nga Bay: limestone karsts, sea caves and the famous James Bond Island. Calmer waters than the open sea.
  • Phi Phi Islands: stunning beaches and lagoons, though the speedboat journey can be choppy; better for older children.
  • Coral Island and nearby islands: shorter trips for snorkelling and beach time.

Choose operators who provide child-size life jackets and avoid boat trips when the sea is rough or flags are red.

What does a five-day Phuket itinerary with family look like?

DayPlan
Day 1Arrive, check in, pool and sunset on the beach
Day 2Beach morning, afternoon rest, Big Buddha at golden hour
Day 3Phang Nga Bay day trip (or a shorter island trip with toddlers)
Day 4Phuket Old Town, aquarium, Promthep Cape sunset
Day 5Final swim, pack, fly home

When is the best time to visit Phuket with family?

  • November to April: the dry season, with calmer seas and sunny days. Peak demand around Christmas and New Year.
  • May to October: the southwest monsoon brings rain and rough seas on the west coast. Many beaches fly red flags, and swimming can be dangerous. It can still work for a resort-and-pool holiday.

Rip currents are a serious risk on Phuket's west coast in the monsoon. Never swim when red flags are up, and keep children within arm's reach in the water.

What should you look for in a Phuket family resort?

On a beach holiday, the resort carries a lot of the load, especially in the hot afternoons. Before booking, check:

  • Beach access: is the resort directly on a swimmable beach, or across a road? Crossing busy roads with small children is tiring.
  • Pools: a shallow children's pool or splash zone with shade.
  • Kids' club: age range, daily schedule and whether parents must stay with younger children.
  • Room layout: family rooms or interconnecting rooms, and whether pool-access rooms have barriers, which matters with toddlers.
  • Location: how long the drive is to the airport and to the sights you plan to visit.

What practical tips help families in Phuket?

How do you get around Phuket with kids?

  • Pre-booked transfers from the airport, ideally with a child seat.
  • Ride-hailing apps and taxis for local trips; agree fares in advance for taxis without meters.
  • A private driver for the day for sightseeing.

Scooters are common but not a safe way to travel with children. Roads are hilly and traffic can be unpredictable.

What will kids eat in Phuket?

Thai food can be adapted for children: fried rice, noodle dishes, grilled chicken, fresh fruit and mild soups. Ask for "no spicy" when ordering. Indian restaurants are easy to find in the main beach areas, and family resorts typically offer international buffets. Use bottled water and choose busy, clean eateries.

What should you pack for Phuket with family?

  • Light, breathable clothing and swimwear for everyone
  • Rash vests and wide-brim hats for children
  • Age-appropriate sunscreen and insect repellent (ask your paediatrician)
  • Modest clothes covering shoulders and knees for temple visits
  • Water shoes for rocky beaches and boat trips
  • A small dry bag for island days

What else should Indian families know?

  1. Check Thailand's current entry and visa requirements for Indian passport holders on the official government website.
  2. Book resorts with shallow pools and kids' clubs; my family-friendly hotel checklist helps.
  3. Buy travel insurance that covers water activities and children's medical care.
  4. Respect local customs, especially at temples and around images of the royal family.

Frequently asked questions

Is Phuket good for toddlers?

Phuket can be lovely for toddlers if you stay in a calm area like Kamala, Karon or Bang Tao and travel in the dry season. Choose a resort with a shallow pool, plan beach time early and late in the day, and keep boat trips short and in calm conditions.

Is Phi Phi worth it with kids?

Phi Phi's scenery is spectacular, but the speedboat ride can be long and bumpy, and popular beaches are crowded. It suits older children who handle boats well. With toddlers, a shorter trip to a nearby island or a calmer Phang Nga Bay tour is often more enjoyable.

How many days are enough in Phuket with family?

Five to seven days is ideal for a family holiday in Phuket. It allows plenty of beach and pool time, one or two day trips and a sightseeing day, without rushing. Add a few days if you are combining Phuket with Bangkok or Krabi.

Should we combine Phuket and Bangkok on one trip?

Combining them works well on a trip of eight days or more. Bangkok offers temples, river boats and city sights, while Phuket gives you beach time to unwind. Domestic flights connect the two quickly. Plan the beach at the end so the holiday finishes relaxed.
